Du Fu was a well-known poet from the Tang Dynasty in China, and the dance piece named after him unfolds the sense of life of a Chinese literacy hero 1300 years ago. He concerned about the people and the philosophy of life, seeking light in the society that was full of lust for power and money.
As the visual director, stage designer and lighting designer, the desire was to present the essence of Chinese traditional culture with the most contemporary vision. The stage intends to express the unique, yet pure pursuit of aesthetics via an extremely symbolic language.
The use of lines derives from the element of warp and weft from fabric, it refers to the finery that embodies wealth and power, as well as it depicts ordinary people’s simple clothes and thatched cottages. When it speaks through projection on top of Du Fu’s poetry, reducing and layering gradually, it bears the weight of great power of emotions. To tell the lyric through the lines, to create the moment by light, to embody the complex of a spectacular, heavy, intense, hearty and lonely life in this passionate and seamless performance are exactly what the scenography of this piece is looking for in its pursuit of art.

《Theatre Panorama》
Coordinator/Producer: Lily Qiu
Coordinator/ Space Installation Designer/ Performance Designer/ Stage Designer: Guangjian Gao
Multimedia Designer: Jiangzhou Feng
Music: Xiaoou Hu
Exhibition Date:20/09/2014-20/10/2014
Exhibition Place: Shanghai Anting Life Hub
Theatre Panorama is a theatrical installation created in the public space of a large-scale commercial building, and its inspiration stems from the very first European style theatre in China——Lyceum Theatre, which was built in 1867, Shanghai. In the atrium of Shanghai Anting Life Hub, there is a fairytale-like royal ‘birdcage’. Based on the historical context of the city, the designer intends to use the spacious and tall atrium to present a performance arena with the whole structure of the classic European theatre, which creates a realistic feeling of theatre space. It is a bold experiment of combining traditional Western theatre and scenes from everyday life in China nowadays, retrospecting the intensive collision of Chinese and Western cultures dates back to 150 years ago and providing a new mode in the cultural development of contemporary theatre.

GOOD LUCK !
Coordinator/ Performer/ Installation design: GAO GUANGJIAN
Premiere:15th December 2017
Location:Shenzhen Nantou Ancient Town
Shenzhen is a miracle of the rapid development of Chinese economy. The old town in the south end has thousands of years of history. It is also an urban village that results from the progress of urbanisation in the past three decades and gathers migrant workers with high-density, becoming an enclave in the modern city, in which it shows the coexistence of different people, spaces, functions and cultures through this unique contemporary landscape.
In the 7th Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (Shenzhen), performance/ installation Good Luck! created a public event on the 15th of December in 2017 at Nantou Old Town. There is a lottery betting station exclusively constructed in the main exhibition space, perfectly duplicates the operating mechanism authorised by the government. Instead of its original purpose, it serves as a collective activity that benefits people. The staff at this Chinese Nantou Lottery Station distributes red envelopes to the residents of the old town with lotteries inside and starts a prize draw regularly, then the winning resident can claim his/her award later. The designer connects and interacts the resident of the old town and the shops with this playful approach that is full of theatrical surprises. The intention is that the warmth of a tiny little lottery could give people an actual benefit in their difficult lives, bring joy and awakening the dream of pursuing happiness.
In Good Luck, the scenographer not only leads the whole piece of work, but also he steps out of the theatre space into the context of contemporary art, transforming his experiences in theatre into an event of contemporary art and showing the unique value of creativity and dynamic thinking. It also involves issues of the current society of China as one of the important elements of this project.
