This performance was designed with the use of audio transmitting devices and headphones between the performers and audience, in order to create a unique spectator experience.

19 performers were telling their own stories simultaneously on the stage, creating 19 hubbubs of voices. Each story was broadcasted on a particular frequency channel through shortwave. With a simple twist of a button, each audience was able to choose different channel via distributed radio device.

Channel shifting,

Story switching,

varying one from another……

The unexpected loud sound interrupted all the story telling.

Maybe it was a sudden scolding

Or,

a compliment, a celebration…

Boiling kettle blows the ladder was creating a jarring whistle continuously…

Opened theatre rear door formed a sound field, and the audience was able to see backstage staff comes and goes right through it.

At the beginning of design process, there was no such thing as a script, the challenge was: how to bring 19 ordinary people together talking about their own stories for an hour on a theatre stage.

This was a theatre event performed on an ongoing bus.

The bus brought the audience into a journey of city wandering through a particular route, meanwhile, what were playing in audience’s headphone are audio contents related to those places passing by, associating mutual memories of this city.

This moving bus seemed like transforming the whole city into a theatre stage.

Interestingly, at one point, the ‘bus auditorium’ became a functional bus again with a mixture of audience and passengers who have no idea what they went on.

The bus traveled from city center to suburb, and arrived at an open landscape on the edge of this city.

It was a documentary journey of revealing the radical development of cities in China for the past decades.

The audience witnessed a ritual of handing over stacks of files besides a solitary desk in the landscape of wilderness.

What contained in those files were biographies of people who passed away during the last year with memories from relatives and friends.

Nearly 100 people’s information was read literally by huddled performers with touch lighting on the way back…

这个演出设计利用音频发射设备和耳机,组织了独特的观演关系;

舞台上,十九个人同时讲述自己的故事,一片人声鼎沸;他们的讲话通过19个短波无线信号发射出去,观众则通过调频收音机选择收听;

随时更换频道,任意选择……,所得版本各异;

下面的水壶逐渐沸腾,发出刺耳的哨音;

剧场后门开启,形成声场,可见后台工作人员偶尔穿行;
